Dumpling Queen Brings Handmade Chinese Dumplings and Classics to Flower Mound

FLOWER MOUND — A new Chinese restaurant is adding handmade dumplings and familiar American-Chinese dishes to the North Dallas dining scene.
Dumpling Queen opened in late May, founded by Lulu Du alongside her daughter Ruby Sun and head chef Andy Fan, who brings decades of Dallas-area restaurant experience.
From homemade soup dumplings to a restaurant dream
The idea for Dumpling Queen started informally when Du prepared her signature soup dumplings for a family friend. The reaction was immediate encouragement to open a restaurant and adopt the name “Dumpling Queen.”
Two years later, that suggestion became reality.
Sun said the restaurant reflects a long-held ambition for her mother, who built her culinary reputation over decades working in both China and North Texas kitchens, including well-known spots such as the now-closed Tian Tian Restaurant in Dallas and Shanghai Taste in Plano.
“She’s well known in Plano,” Sun said in Mandarin. “Opening her own place has been her dream.”
Handmade dumplings at the center of the menu
Dumpling Queen focuses heavily on handcrafted dumplings made throughout the day in full view of customers at a central preparation counter.
Signature items include:
- xiao long bao (soup dumplings)
- four-color rainbow dumplings with mixed fillings
- sheng jian bao (pan-fried dumplings with crispy bottoms)
- honeycomb-style guo tie potstickers
- pan-fried thumb buns served in bite-sized portions
Chef Fan also leads preparation of American-Chinese staples such as orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp, and broccoli beef, using his own recipes and sauces.
The menu is designed to balance traditional Chinese techniques with flavors familiar to American diners.
A focus on technique, tradition, and daily preparation
Du, who began learning pastry and dough techniques in Qingdao at around age 20, has spent more than 30 years working with dumplings and buns. She is known locally for her precise approach to dough and fillings, which she says is central to quality.
At Dumpling Queen, wrappers and fillings are prepared by hand daily, with chefs working several hours each day at the dumpling station.
Sun said her mother’s recipes are carefully measured, with attention to ingredient balance and texture. The restaurant also avoids additives such as MSG and uses natural coloring for specialty items like rainbow dumplings.
Family partnership behind the restaurant
The business is a family effort, with Du leading culinary development, Sun managing ownership responsibilities, and Fan overseeing kitchen operations.
Fan, who has worked in Dallas-area restaurants for around 30 years, including roles at franchises such as Lover’s Egg Roll, said the menu strategy intentionally combines traditional dumpling dishes with popular Chinese-American flavors.
“It’s about blending what people are looking for right now,” he said.
Why Flower Mound was chosen
Sun said the decision to open in Flower Mound was intentional. The area’s smaller Chinese population and welcoming community atmosphere made it an attractive location for a new concept.
Since opening, the restaurant has drawn both local customers and visitors from across the region.
Location and upcoming opening event
Dumpling Queen is located at 1050 Flower Mound Road, Suite 110, Flower Mound, Texas.
The restaurant operates daily with lunch and dinner service, with extended weekend hours. A formal opening celebration is scheduled for June 25 at 11 a.m., featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a Chinese lion dance performance.
