Texas Senate Race Intensifies: Talarico Outraises Paxton as Border Battles and Records Disputes Heat Up

The high-stakes battle for the Texas Senate seat is rapidly accelerating. The past week delivered pivotal developments in the matchup between Democratic state Representative James Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, highlighted by a widening financial gap, strategic regional tours, and escalating legal disputes.

Talarico Secures Massive Second-Quarter Fundraising Lead

In a major financial breakthrough, Austin Democrat James Talarico announced a staggering $30 million haul for the second quarter of the year. This total more than triples the $9 million brought in by Paxton during the same timeframe.

The surge marks Talarico’s most successful fundraising period yet, following a strong $27 million showing in the first quarter. While Paxton trailed significantly, the $9 million represents his own strongest quarter to date, with momentum building after his victory over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the late-May Republican runoff.

Talarico attributed the fundraising surge to grassroots support for his platforms on anti-corruption and lowering everyday costs. Meanwhile, Paxton’s campaign countered that their haul demonstrates a fierce voter enthusiasm to send a battle-tested conservative leader to Washington.

Ted Cruz Sound the Alarm for Texas Republicans

Appearing on Sean Hannity’s radio show—which was guest-hosted by Texas Governor Greg Abbott—Senator Ted Cruz warned the GOP against complacency, stating that Talarico poses a genuine threat to flip the seat.

“It’s going to be close,” Cruz emphasized during the broadcast, acknowledging the Democrat’s affable, charismatic presentation and noting that he often “sounds like a preacher.” However, Cruz argued that Talarico’s appeal rests on voters remaining unfamiliar with policy positions he described as overly extreme.

Despite the warning, Cruz predicted a Republican victory. Governor Abbott echoed that confidence, asserting that Talarico will prove highly beatable once the broader Texas electorate learns more about his actual platform.

Talarico Launches “Frontera Tour” Across the Border

Looking to build momentum in key regions, Talarico launched his 750-mile “Frontera Tour” in El Paso, drawing an opening crowd of over 700 supporters. The campaign swing, running through Wednesday, features town halls, church visits, and policy rollouts tailored to border communities that Talarico argues both major parties have long ignored.

Speaking after the El Paso kickoff, Talarico advocated for comprehensive immigration reform that pairs border security with a pathway for long-term undocumented residents to fully participate in society. He stated that the country needs a system reflecting American values as both a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants.

Clash Exploits Legal Records From Attorney General’s Office

The campaign has also turned into a battle over transparency. Talarico criticized Paxton’s office for blocking a public records request regarding the prosecution of Adam Hoffman, a former Waco attorney accused of child sexual abuse. Talarico pledged to gather bipartisan pressure to force the release of the documents, stating that if the Attorney General has nothing to hide, he should release the material.

The Attorney General’s office previously negotiated a plea deal for Hoffman, allowing him to plead guilty to reduced charges. Hoffman served 29 days in jail earlier this year and avoided the Texas sex offender registry.

Defending the agreement, prosecutors noted that Hoffman’s initial trial resulted in a deadlocked jury, and the young victim explicitly wished to avoid testifying in court a second time.
