Seven Texas Democrats Form Coalition to Challenge Republican Strongholds on Political Reform Platform

A new coalition of seven Democratic congressional nominees is teaming up to challenge the conventional political wisdom in Texas, aiming to contest districts long considered safely Republican.

The group, operating under the banner Take BAC Congress (Balance and Accountability to Constituents), includes TX-03 candidate Evan Hunt. The candidates argue that the state’s competitive landscape is wider than national analysts realize, and are leveraging a shared political reform platform to build a unified, statewide campaign network.

A Coordinated Strategy to Flip Targeted Seats

The coalition links campaigns across seven Republican-held Texas congressional districts:

  • Evan Hunt (TX-03)
  • Jason Pearce (TX-04)
  • Chelsey Hockett (TX-05)
  • Claire Reynolds (TX-11)
  • Steven Shook (TX-26)
  • Justin Early (TX-31)
  • Dan Barrios (TX-32)

By pooling resources, the nominees hope to build a more resilient infrastructure ahead of the November elections. The financial strategy relies on an even revenue-sharing model among all seven campaigns. In a statement introducing the initiative, Hunt emphasized a grassroots, self-reliant approach to shifting the state’s political dynamics. He stated that Texas voters are eager for change, and noted that the seven-district alliance intends to fund campaigns capable of sending a new generation of service-minded leaders to Washington rather than waiting for outside assistance to flip the state.

While the coalition did not publicize a specific fundraising target for its recent launch event at the Marriott AC Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C., organizers emphasized that the broader objective is sustaining long-term visibility. Kevin Numerick, Hunt’s campaign manager, explained that the effort focuses on generating immediate resources alongside lasting attention and competitive infrastructure to ensure Democrats can compete across the entire map.

The Reform Platform: Term Limits and Anti-Corruption

Beyond financial cooperation, Take BAC Congress relies on a synchronized messaging strategy centered on systemic political ethics. The coalition’s core platform focuses on three main policy goals:

  1. Implementing congressional term limits
  2. Banning members of Congress from trading stocks
  3. Overturning the Citizens United Supreme Court decision to limit corporate campaign spending

According to campaign officials, these issues cross traditional party lines and resonate heavily with independent and conservative voters. Numerick noted that coordinated messaging against political corruption is already active across all seven districts. He highlighted congressional term limits as the proposal drawing the strongest voter response, stating that constituents are increasingly dissatisfied with career politicians treating legislative seats as lifetime appointments.

Uphill Battle in a Redrawn Landscape

The coalition faces steep structural hurdles. Every seat targeted by Take BAC Congress is currently occupied by a Republican incumbent.

The challenge is particularly pronounced in TX-03, where Hunt is running against incumbent Republican Representative Keith Self. Following the 2025 redistricting cycle, the boundaries of TX-03 were shifted to incorporate several rural counties east of Collin County. Though Collin County continues to experience rapid population growth and shifting demographics, the newly added rural areas lean heavily conservative, making the reconfigured district a tougher environment for Democratic challengers.

Representative Keith Self’s office has been reached for comment regarding the coalition’s platform and its assessment of the TX-03 race. Any response will be updated accordingly.
