To commemorate America’s semiquincentennial, tourism officials have introduced an interactive, self-guided journey through the architectural and cultural heritage of McKinney. The newly launched America 250 Scavenger Hunt invites both locals and tourists to uncover the city’s storied past through their mobile devices.

Running through July 31, the initiative rewards participants who finish the tour with a commemorative, limited-edition America 250 challenge coin, available while supplies last.

How to Participate in the Historic Hunt

Engaging in the local celebration requires just a few simple steps utilizing digital and foot-based exploration:

  • Download the App: Participants start by installing the official McKinney TX App on their smartphones.
  • Select the Tour: Users navigate to and select the specialized America 250 Scavenger Hunt itinerary.
  • Explore and Check In: As explorers navigate the historic downtown footprint, the app tracks and logs their arrivals at each mandatory destination.
  • Claim the Reward: After completing all designated stops, participants can head to the Visit McKinney Experience Center & Shop, located at 200 W. Virginia St., to pick up their commemorative coin.

Featured Historical Landmarks

The walking tour highlights several of the community’s most prominent historical sites, bridging generations of local history with the national milestone. Key stops on the itinerary include:

Chestnut Square Heritage Village

This community fixture showcases a collection of meticulously preserved historic homes and structures, representing local life spanning from the 1850s to the 1930s.

Collin County History Museum

Housed within a prominent civic landmark, this museum operates inside what was originally the city’s historic post office building.

Heard-Craig Arts Center & Museum

A grand historic mansion that has evolved over the decades into a vital cultural hub and community arts venue.

Historic Downtown McKinney

The broader downtown commercial district features carefully preserved 19th- and early 20th-century architecture that continues to anchor the city’s unique identity.

Engaging the Community Through History

The initiative aims to turn education into an engaging outdoor experience for families, newcomers, and native residents alike.

“We really want the community, both residents and visitors alike, to get involved and explore the rich history of McKinney,” said Sarah Nolting, senior communications and media specialist. “This is a fun way to get out of the house, learn about the community and visit places you may not even know about!”
