Beloved for its hand-painted confections and signature Carl the Snowman hot cocoa creation, the Dallas-based chocolate brand will shut down after selling through its remaining inventory.

After more than 10 years in business, Dallas chocolatier Kate Weiser Chocolate has announced that it is closing. Founded in 2014, the company built a strong following for its colorful, hand-painted chocolates and premium gift boxes. Among its most recognizable creations was Carl the Snowman, a double-stacked chocolate globe designed to melt into hot cocoa. The seasonal product became especially well known after being included on Oprah Winfrey’s Favorite Things list last year.

Over the years, Kate Weiser Chocolate also earned repeated recognition in local best-of rankings and became one of Dallas’ most recognizable specialty dessert brands.

A Distinctive Name in Dallas Chocolate

Kate Weiser launched the business in 2014 and quickly drew attention for chocolates that combined pastry technique with artistic presentation. Her collections stood out for their polished appearance, modern design and gift-ready appeal.

Early in the company’s growth, Weiser described the pace of business as intense, with long workdays, but said the experience was rewarding because the company was her own. She entered culinary school shortly after high school, worked as a pastry chef, and later refined her chocolate-making skills at Chocolate Secrets, where she developed expertise in painted chocolates.

The brand’s Trinity Groves location, just west of downtown Dallas, became one of the longest-running retail tenants in the development. Kate Weiser Chocolate also operated a retail store at NorthPark.

Why Kate Weiser Chocolate Is Closing

In a Facebook announcement, Weiser said she and her financial partners made the decision to shut down the business. She said the outcome was not what she had hoped for, but added that she remains proud of what the company built, including the lessons learned, the relationships formed and the experiences gained along the way.

She also said efforts have been made, with help from some customers, to find jobs for members of her team.

Weiser pointed to several business pressures behind the closure, saying the company’s model was highly seasonal, labor-intensive and increasingly expensive to sustain in recent years.

Rising Costs Added Pressure

The closure comes after several difficult years for food businesses facing higher operating costs. Chocolate makers were also hit by a major spike in cocoa prices. Cocoa, the key ingredient in chocolate, saw prices surge in 2024 due to weather-related disruptions and crop disease before easing back toward more typical levels last month.

Even with some recent relief in cocoa pricing, broader costs across the food industry, including labor, supplies and rent, have remained elevated, making operations more challenging for specialty food businesses.

Final Days for the Brand

Both Kate Weiser Chocolate locations, at Trinity Groves and NorthPark, will remain open until all remaining inventory is sold.

That means customers will still have one final opportunity to buy the company’s most famous seasonal product. Carl the Snowman is expected to return for one last holiday season before the business closes for good.
