From multi-lane suburban expansions to essential underground utility overhauls, these public works aim to untangle bottlenecks and upgrade aging corridors.
Here is a look at five notable roadway initiatives currently entering construction or pushing toward completion across the Metroplex.
Upcoming Projects
Legacy Drive & Stonebrook Parkway Expansion | Frisco
- Scope:Frisco plans to rebuild and expand Legacy Drive between Lebanon Road and Stonebrook Parkway, alongside a parallel widening of Stonebrook Parkway from Legacy Drive to 4th Army Drive.
- Current Status: Engineers are completing design work, with heavy machinery slated to break ground before the end of 2026.
- Projected Window:Fall 2026 – Mid-2028
- Budget & Funding:$20 million, funded entirely by the City of Frisco.
FM 1385 Capacity Expansion | Prosper
- Scope: The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to widen FM 1385 from US 380 north to Union Park Boulevard, converting the corridor into a four-lane thoroughfare equipped with modern curbs and gutters.
- Current Status:In August, the Texas Transportation Commission earmarked $38.2 million for the expansion under TxDOT’s 2027 Unified Transportation Program. Because the program serves as a planning schedule rather than an irrevocable budget allocation, specifics remain subject to revision.
- Projected Window: Construction timeline remains to be determined.
- Budget & Funding:$38.2 million in estimated construction costs, funded by TxDOT.
Projects in Progress
Redstone Road Reconstruction | Denton
- Scope: Contractors are overhauling pavement and subterranean utility mains along Redstone Road between Hercules Lane and Neptune Drive.
- Current Status: Crews have laid the lime-stabilized subgrade, finished fine grading, and paved the initial asphalt layer. Active work has now shifted to installing curbs and drainage gutters.
- Projected Window: May 2025 – October 2026 (nearing completion).
- Budget & Funding: $2.28 million, backed by the City of Denton.
State Highway 5 Utility Relocations (Phase 1) | McKinney
- Scope: McKinney is relocating vital municipal water and wastewater lines out of the right-of-way to clear a path for TxDOT’s forthcoming reconstruction of State Highway 5.
- Current Status: Crews have completed roughly 80% of the relocation work. All tasks south of Eldorado Parkway/Industrial Boulevard are finished, allowing TxDOT’s road crews to begin operations. Motorists can expect periodic localized detours and lane closures between Elm Street and US 380 while crews wrap up the northern segments.
- Projected Window: May 2024 – Early 2027.
- Budget & Funding: $26.8 million, fronted by the City of McKinney with future TxDOT reimbursements.
West Shore Drive & Fontana Avenue Enhancements | Richardson
- Scope: Richardson is revitalizing local transit corridors through utility, sidewalk, and street surface replacements along West Shore Drive (from Campbell Road to Arapaho Road) and Fontana Avenue (from West Shore Drive to Meadow View Drive).
- Current Status: Utility teams are replacing sewer lines along West Shore Drive between Warren Way and Woodland Way while simultaneously laying a new water main on Fontana Avenue.
- Projected Window: Fall 2025 – Summer 2027.
- Budget & Funding: $10.39 million, funded by the City of Richardson.
