Advocacy groups preparing to challenge President Donald Trump’s upcoming Republican midterm convention in Dallas announced Saturday that they are pushing forward with demonstration plans, even as negotiations over permits and march routes remain unresolved with city officials.

The coalition, organized under the banner Dallas Against the Trump Agenda, held a news conference outside Dallas City Hall on Saturday, August 22, 2026, to rally public support and detail preparations for a planned protest on September 10. The political convention—scheduled for September 9–10 at the American Airlines Center—is projected to draw roughly 20,000 attendees and intense national media coverage ahead of the November midterm elections.

Organizers are requesting permission to assemble at Pike Park, just north of downtown, before marching toward the arena.

Permit Negotiations and Security Preparations

Coalition representatives have met with Dallas’ Office of Special Events to secure a special event permit, arrange safety training, and coordinate legal monitors.

“Our goal is to reach an agreement with city officials that upholds our constitutional rights,” said organizer Jo Hargis of the DFW Anti-War Committee. Hargis noted that past national political conventions established precedents allowing demonstrators within sight and sound of event venues.

Dallas police officials indicated that permit decisions will follow the completion of broader security protocols for the high-profile gathering. Dallas Police Department spokesperson Corbin Rubinson stated that authorities are still finalizing security parameters for the perimeter around the American Airlines Center.

Federal and municipal agencies have spent weeks preparing for major traffic closures, crowd management, and secure perimeters. The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that partner agencies are executing a coordinated operational plan designed to protect attendees and the public while accommodating lawful demonstrations.

The Dallas Against the Trump Agenda coalition comprises several advocacy organizations, including the DFW Anti-War Committee, El Movimiento, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, and the Dallas–Fort Worth chapter of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

During Saturday’s briefing, speakers outlined the demonstration’s primary policy targets, including federal immigration enforcement, economic pressures facing working families, and voting access.

“We refuse to stand by while policies compromise our voting rights and economic measures make basic housing and food unaffordable for everyday families,” said Sonja Olson, an organizer with Indivisible Dallas.

Republican organizers and party officials have dismissed the coalition’s criticism, affirming that their policy platform reflects broad voter support heading into the fall elections.

Coalition leaders expect further updates from municipal officials regarding approved routes and designated protest zones in the coming days.
