San Diego Favorite Pappalecco Brings Its Italian Charm to Downtown Plano This January

Share

Pappalecco, the beloved San Diego café celebrated for its Italian-style coffee, gelato, pastries and warm hospitality, is making its Texas debut in downtown Plano. The new shop will open on January 10, 2026, featuring an 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting and a grand-opening weekend offering 50% off all menu items, excluding alcohol. The expansion marks a new milestone for the brand, bringing its Little Italy roots to a community-focused space in Collin County. Owners Jolly Chen and Chi Yan say they are excited to introduce Plano residents to Pappalecco’s signature blend of simplicity, quality and genuine warmth.“We’re honored to bring Pappalecco to Plano,” the owners said in a joint statement. “Our hope is that it becomes a place where people feel cared for and can experience the best of Italian café culture.”

A Café Designed for Connection

The Plano location follows the same philosophy that shaped Pappalecco’s San Diego presence: slow-paced comfort, minimalist Italian design and a focus on community. The interiors were crafted by an Italian design team using authentic finishes, creating an atmosphere meant to encourage conversation and togetherness.Guests can expect many of the classics that made the original café a staple, including the Marocchino with espresso and Nutella, the Caffè Freddo blended with gelato and the signature affogato. For Chi, what inspired the Texas expansion wasn’t just great coffee — it was the feeling of belonging he experienced during his first visit to Pappalecco’s Little Italy location.“I found myself chatting with the staff and customers who were so warm and welcoming,” he told Local Profile. “That sense of connection is what inspired us to bring the brand to Texas.”

Honoring Italian Roots While Embracing Texas

Authenticity plays a central role in Pappalecco’s identity. Chi says the Plano café aims to keep the Italian tradition alive by focusing on quality, intentional hospitality and making guests feel at home. The opening has also been a true family effort. The couple’s children helped taste menu items, suggest flavors and share ideas for the shop — a process Chi describes as meaningful and memorable.

What to Try First

While the menu is packed with favorites, the owners recommend a few standouts:

  • Rising Sun Toast paired with a cappuccino (Jolly’s pick)
  • Gelato and the classic affogato (Chi’s favorites)
  • Freshly-made gelato in 12 rotating flavors, prepared in full view of guests for maximum freshness

Plano’s Warm Welcome

Bringing a well-loved San Diego café to Texas came with challenges, but the owners say they’ve been overwhelmed by the number of DFW residents who already know and love Pappalecco. Many former San Diego regulars even have ties to Plano, making the transition especially rewarding.

As the grand opening approaches, Chi hopes guests immediately feel the warmth, from the aroma of espresso to the inviting design and friendly staff.
