McKINNEY, TEXAS — McKinney National Airport (TKI) has officially signed its first airline for commercial flights. Avelo Airlines, a Houston-based low-cost carrier, will operate passenger flights as the airport expands to meet growing demand in North Texas.
Transitioning to Commercial Service
For more than 40 years, McKinney National Airport has primarily served general aviation. With its growing population and regional demand, the airport is now preparing to offer commercial air service. A four-gate terminal is under construction, designed to expand to six gates, with service expected to launch in late 2026.
The airport received $30 million in March 2025 from the McKinney Community Development Corporation for the eastside terminal and infrastructure improvements. Construction on these projects is already underway.
The Avelo Airlines Agreement
Avelo signed a five-year Use and Lease Agreement (ULA) with an optional five-year extension. The agreement outlines:
- Use of runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking
- Access to check-in counters, boarding gates, and flight display areas
- Exclusive office and administrative spaces
- Rates including per-passenger fees and aircraft fuel charges
This ULA establishes the framework for Avelo and future airlines to operate at TKI, ensuring a smooth launch of commercial services.
Officials Celebrate the Milestone
McKinney Mayor Bill Cox called the partnership an “important milestone” for the city.
Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said:
“We believe that our everyday low fares, convenient and reliable service, combined with an easy-to-use, small airport, is a combination the residents of McKinney and North Texas will enthusiastically embrace. As a proud Texas company, we are especially excited to plant our flag at TKI, just a few hours north of our home in Houston.”
Looking Ahead
Avelo currently operates a single DFW-area route to New Haven, Connecticut. The airline will announce additional nonstop destinations from TKI closer to the terminal’s opening. Commercial service at McKinney National Airport is planned to begin late 2026, positioning TKI as a key regional hub.
