In a game for the ages, Lone Star High School scored 21 points in the final five minutes to defeat 12-time state champion Aledo 56-52 in the 5A Division I state semifinal. The thrilling victory, held Friday night at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield, marks the first time in school history that Lone Star finishes a season 15-0.

With six minutes left, Lone Star trailed by 17 points and appeared on the brink of defeat. But sophomore quarterback Trey Wright, who threw for five touchdowns and ran for three more, led a remarkable comeback that energized the Rangers’ players, coaches, and fans alike.

Senior receiver Davian Groce was a standout, hauling in 15 catches for 310 yards and four touchdowns. His ability to get open and make big plays complemented Wright’s exceptional performance, which included 366 passing yards, 177 rushing yards, and a total of eight touchdowns.

The Rangers’ defense also played a critical role, forcing a key punt and creating a turnover on downs that kept the comeback alive. Starting from their own 1-yard line, Lone Star executed deep passes, rushing plays, and a perfect onside kick to take the lead in the final 30 seconds. The game ended when senior Quintin Henderson recovered a fumble, sealing the victory for Lone Star.

Head coach Jeff Rayburn praised his team’s resilience and teamwork, emphasizing the players’ dedication to one another and their shared goal of making history. With this win, Lone Star is set to face Smithson Valley (14-1) in the state championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Friday, December 19 at 7 p.m.. Tickets and fan information are available through the school and stadium.

Lone Star’s victory over powerhouse programs like Highland Park and Aledo—teams with a combined 18 state football championships—highlights the Rangers’ historic season and sets the stage for Frisco ISD’s first-ever state football championship appearance.
