The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system is preparing for a major security overhaul, highlighting recent improvements and laying out goals ahead of the $16 million upgrade set to begin in early 2026. The initiative will enhance security across buses, trains, and stations, with new cameras, updated software, and other technology upgrades.
At a special joint meeting of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the DART Board, Board Chair Randall Bryant emphasized the progress already made in ensuring rider safety and preventing crime.
“I think it’s important that DART shares its story and the work we’ve been doing at the board level to establish policies and fund operations,” Bryant said. “Equally important is the dedication of our police force, transit security officers, and fare enforcement personnel who are on the front lines every day to increase safety and prevent crimes.”
DART reports notable declines in criminal activity across its system. Crimes against persons decreased nearly 22%, while property crimes dropped around 28% when comparing the second through fourth quarters of fiscal year 2024 to the same period in 2025.
Despite the improvements, DART acknowledges challenges remain. The agency currently has the second-highest number of jail bookings among all departments and municipalities in Dallas County. To address this, officials plan to focus on tracking repeat offenders and collaborating with local law enforcement to implement “more impactful” protections designed to deter future offenses.
The upcoming security upgrades are part of a broader strategy to reinforce public confidence in DART as some surrounding cities consider ending partnerships with the transit system. Officials say the $16 million investment will provide riders with safer and more secure transit experiences across the network.
