D-FW July 4th Holiday Guide: What’s Open and Closed Across the Metroplex
Share
North Texas is gearing up for a historic Independence Day weekend as America celebrates its 250th anniversary. From massive fireworks displays and traditional parades to Texas’ largest drone show and a rare viewing of a “lost copy” of the Declaration of Independence at Fair Park, Dallas-Fort Worth has no shortage of festivities.
Because July 4th falls on a Saturday this year, the holiday shifts the schedules for many local and federal government operations, with several institutions observing it on Friday, July 3rd instead.
If you need to run errands, grab groceries, or visit a government office this weekend, here is everything you need to know about holiday closures and modified schedules across the Metroplex.
Supermarkets and Wholesale Clubs
If you are hosting a backyard barbecue or stocking up on party supplies, most major regional supermarkets are keeping their doors open, though individual locations may reduce their hours.
- Standard Grocery Stores: H-E-B, Tom Thumb, Kroger, Central Market, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Walmart will all operate through the weekend. Note that in-store pharmacies and coffee shops may set independent holiday hours.
- Wholesale Clubs: Shopping options vary by brand. Both Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club plan to remain open all weekend. However, Costco will close all locations nationwide on Saturday, July 4th.
Banks, Mail Delivery, and Government Offices
The shifting weekend schedule means Friday will serve as the observed holiday for numerous public offices and financial markets.
- Financial Institutions: The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and its Texas branches, along with major commercial banks like Chase and Comerica, will operate normally on Friday but close entirely on Saturday. The stock market will be closed on Friday, July 3rd.
- Postal Services: The United States Postal Service (USPS) will maintain normal delivery and office hours on Friday. Post offices will close and regular mail delivery will pause on Saturday, resuming on Monday. Private carriers UPS and FedEx will suspend all pickup and delivery services and close retail locations on Saturday.
- Government Facilities: Public agencies observing the holiday on Friday include the DMV, the Social Security Administration, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Trash and Recycling Collection
For most North Texas residents, the holiday weekend will not disrupt municipal waste services, though there is one major exception.
- Normal Service: Regular sanitation schedules remain unchanged in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Frisco, Denton, and McKinney.
- Delayed Service: Irving residents will see changes. The city is pausing all garbage and recycling collection on Friday due to municipal facility closures.
Restaurants, Shopping Malls, and Retail
Retailers and dining chains across D-FW are largely staying open to accommodate holiday crowds, though smaller businesses may adjust their availability.
- Major Dining Chains: National and regional favorites like Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Whataburger, Sonic, Cotton Patch Cafe, and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit will welcome guests all weekend, though individual franchise hours may vary.
- Local Favorites: Shug’s Bagels and most Eatzi’s locations plan to stay open. For independent local businesses and boutique shops, residents should call ahead or check social media before heading out.
- Shopping Centers: Major regional malls, including Galleria Dallas and NorthPark Center, will be open for holiday shopping. Keep in mind that individual department stores and boutiques inside the malls may set their own holiday hours.
