Trump Endorses Paxton as Cornyn Struggles to Win MAGA Support

John Cornyn discovered this week that alignment with Donald Trump does not necessarily guarantee support from the Republican Party’s hard-line MAGA base.

On Tuesday, Trump endorsed Ken Paxton in the closely watched Republican Senate runoff, choosing the Texas attorney general over Cornyn in a race that has highlighted divisions within the GOP.

The endorsement represented a major victory for Paxton, who has built strong support among conservative activists skeptical of Cornyn’s more traditional Republican approach.

Cornyn Shifted Toward Trump-Aligned Positions

Throughout the campaign, Cornyn worked to strengthen his ties with Trump and his political movement.

The longtime senator publicly embraced several Trump-backed policies that he had previously criticized, including support for a border wall. Earlier this month, Cornyn also introduced legislation proposing that a new federal highway in Texas be named after Trump. In another symbolic gesture, Cornyn shared a social media photo showing himself reading Trump’s book, The Art of the Deal. Following Cornyn’s narrow first-place finish over Paxton in the March 3 Republican primary, political observers believed Trump was leaning toward endorsing the senator. However, Paxton remained in the race and argued he would withdraw only if the Senate approved the SAVE Act, a voter identification bill.

When the legislation failed to advance, Paxton blamed Cornyn, helping intensify tensions between the two candidates.

MAGA Base Remains Skeptical of Establishment Republicans

Despite Cornyn’s efforts to align himself with Trump, many conservative voters continue to view him as part of a more establishment-oriented Republican tradition centered on compromise and Senate negotiations.

That perception has made it difficult for Cornyn to fully connect with the MAGA movement, which has increasingly favored candidates seen as more confrontational and ideologically rigid. After Trump announced his endorsement of Paxton, Cornyn said he would continue campaigning ahead of next Tuesday’s runoff election. He argued Republicans must select a candidate capable of defeating Democrat James Talarico in November.

The runoff now presents Cornyn with a significant political test as he attempts to regain support from a Republican electorate increasingly shaped by Trump-aligned conservative activists.
