Rangers Close Difficult April With Shutout Win Over Yankees

The Texas Rangers ended a demanding opening month with a 3-0 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The victory moved Texas to 15-16 entering May, a record that still reflects inconsistency but also suggests the club stayed competitive through one of the toughest early schedules in baseball.

Rangers Survive a Difficult Opening Stretch

Texas faced a challenging April schedule that included several projected contenders and division leaders. Despite finishing the month one game under .500, manager Skip Schumaker said the Rangers showed they could compete with top teams.

Schumaker said Texas matched up well against strong opponents and remained competitive even in games it failed to win. He also pointed to the team’s bullpen work, late-game performances and resilience despite limited production from some key players.

The Rangers played much of April without Wyatt Langford, while Corey Seager struggled through a slow start. Nathan Eovaldi also did not begin the season the way the club expected. Even with those issues, Texas avoided falling too far behind early.

Josh Jung Delivers Key Hit

Josh Jung continued his strong turnaround by producing the decisive moment Wednesday. His fifth-inning single broke a scoreless tie and brought home two runs.

The hit extended Jung’s hitting streak to all nine games of the homestand. After opening the season 0-for-17, Jung has hit .381 since April 1, marking one of the strongest stretches of his career.

Schumaker said Jung’s April performance should remind him of the type of player he can be. Jung said he feels settled at the plate and wants to maintain his current approach without trying to force too much.

Jacob Latz Emerging as Late-Inning Option

The Rangers also received another strong performance from Jacob Latz, who pitched the final two innings against New York to earn his second save of the season.

Latz has quickly become one of Texas’ most reliable bullpen options. After losing the fifth starter competition, he accepted a relief role and has made the most of it. He began the season by holding the first 30 batters he faced without a hit and has posted a 0.42 WHIP across 16⅔ innings.

Schumaker suggested Latz could become a regular ninth-inning option depending on matchups. The Rangers entered the season uncertain about their closer situation, and injuries to Chris Martin and Robert Garcia added to that concern.

Bullpen Depth Gives Texas a Boost

Beyond Latz, the Rangers have found useful relief innings from Jakob Junis, Gavin Collyer and Peyton Gray. Collyer and Gray, both spring training surprises, have combined for 9⅔ scoreless innings so far.

That bullpen production has been important for a team still waiting for its offense to fully develop. Texas needed unexpected contributors in relief, and April provided several positive signs.

Seager and Langford Still Searching for Rhythm

The Rangers have also managed to stay competitive without full production from two major offensive pieces. Langford missed roughly one-third of the team’s games, while Seager went 0-for-3 on Wednesday, dropping his batting average to .207 with a .722 OPS.

Seager’s career OPS is .868, so the Rangers will expect his numbers to improve over the coming months. If he returns closer to his normal level, Texas’ offense could gain a major lift.

Schedule Could Become More Manageable

Texas still faces difficult series against Detroit, the Yankees and the Chicago Cubs, but the schedule may ease after that. According to Tankathon’s strength-of-schedule calculations cited in the report, the Rangers had the easiest remaining schedule in baseball over the final five months, with opponents holding a combined .472 winning percentage.

That makes April’s survival more meaningful. The Rangers did not dominate the first month, but they found bullpen answers, saw Jung take a major step forward and stayed within reach while waiting for several key players to improve.

As Schumaker noted, there are signs that give Texas reason to feel encouraged heading into May.
