Gas Prices Climb Across Dallas as Global Tensions Push Oil Higher

Share

Gas prices across Dallas have risen sharply in recent days, with many stations around the city posting prices around $3.19 per gallon as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to influence global oil markets. According to AAA Texas, drivers in North Texas are now paying nearly 60 cents more per gallon than they were a week ago. The spike follows escalating conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted global energy markets and driven crude oil prices upward.

At one point Monday, the price of crude oil climbed to nearly $120 per barrel, the highest level since the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, before dropping back below $100 after President Donald Trump suggested the United States’ involvement in the conflict could begin winding down.

Strait of Hormuz Disruption Impacts Global Supply

A major factor behind the price increase is the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route south of Iran through which more than 20% of the world’s oil supply typically passes. Reports indicate the conflict has significantly disrupted shipping through the waterway, placing pressure on global oil supply chains. As a result, drivers across Dallas are seeing the impact at the pump.

J.R. Smith, who was filling up his vehicle at an East Dallas gas station Monday, said the rising costs quickly become noticeable when paying for fuel. “It really adds up fast,” Smith said. “And it’s really nerve-wracking.”

Smith said he may have to cut back on discretionary spending, such as eating out or buying snacks, if prices continue to rise.

Mixed Reactions From Drivers

Not all drivers expressed concern about the higher prices. Some said they had not noticed the increase or felt it was simply part of everyday expenses. “You’ve got to get it no matter how much it is,” said Jissel Lopez, who was fueling up at a gas station in Oak Cliff. “I didn’t even notice it changed, honestly. … You’ve got to get where you’re going.” Others said the price increase could affect their income. A Dallas resident working as an Uber driver said higher fuel costs could cut into profits if prices continue climbing.

However, he noted that similar situations in the past led rideshare companies to add temporary fuel surcharges to help offset rising gas prices.

Economic Pressure for Some Households

While some drivers are taking the increase in stride, rising fuel costs may place additional pressure on households already facing financial strain. Recent reports have shown rising levels of debt and eviction filings in Dallas County, suggesting many families were already struggling with expenses before the latest fuel price surge.

For now, drivers across North Texas are watching closely to see whether prices stabilize or continue climbing in the coming weeks.
