Ice Forces Widespread School Closures Across Collin County

Freezing temperatures and lingering icy roads have prompted widespread school closures across Collin County as hazardous conditions continue into midweek. With roadways slow to thaw and morning travel expected to remain dangerous, multiple school districts announced they will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 28, prioritizing student and staff safety.
Districts Closed Wednesday
The following school districts have confirmed closures:
- Anna ISD
- Allen ISD
- Blue Ridge ISD
- Celina ISD
- Frisco ISD
- Lovejoy ISD
- McKinney ISD
- Melissa ISD
- Plano ISD
- Prosper ISD
- Princeton ISD
- Van Alstyne ISD
Officials say more closures may be announced as conditions evolve, and families are encouraged to monitor district communications for updates.
Hazardous Conditions Continue
The National Weather Service reports that patchy to dense freezing fog is expected overnight into Wednesday morning across North Texas, increasing the risk of black ice on untreated roads, bridges and sidewalks. Even light ice accumulation can create slick, hard-to-see hazards during the morning commute.
Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speeds, allow extra travel time and maintain greater distance between vehicles.
When Will Conditions Improve?
While the worst of the Arctic air is expected to ease by midweek, temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages. Highs are forecast to reach the upper 30s to low 40s, with overnight lows still dipping into the teens and 20s.
School officials say reopening decisions will continue to be based on road conditions and updated weather guidance, with safety remaining the top priority.
